We’ve all heard the rule that we should be drinking at least 8-10 eight ounce glasses of water per day.  We’ve heard the benefits of how it can help rid your body of toxins and therefor help keep our skin clear and maintain body weight.  Below are a few more tidbits of information and ways to increase your water consumption.

Many people who overeat are actually often dehydrated.  Drinking more water will help you feel more full and satisfied with your meal and therefor will help you to not overeat.

The human body consists of approximately 70% water, but did you know that number decreases with age?  By the time we reach our fifties, our water levels have dropped which is one of the reasons for loss of skin elasticity.

Other than your one cup of caffeinated coffee or tea, all your remaining drinks should be water.  However, you don’t have to drink just plain ol’ water.  Try some of these tips to give your water some extra added flavor and umpf (and for heavens sakes, unless you’re a major athlete, stay away from the sports drinks and specialty waters – your body just doesn’t need them):

  • Add lemons, limes, blueberries, oranges, strawberries, cucumbers, etc. to your water.  Make a pitcher each morning and drink from it throughout the day.
  • De-caffeinated herbal teas are counted as a water substitute.
  • Add a little grated ginger to a tea strainer and pour hot/warm water over it.  You can then refrigerate it and drink it cool later with a little lemon or drink it warm as a home-made tea.
  • Add a packet of Emergen-C to your water.  There is nothing bad for you in these packets, and they come in lots of yummy flavors.
  • Buy a large (16 oz. or more) re-usable cup with a straw and pour from your pitcher into that cup throughout the day.  I find that when I drink from a straw, I drink a lot more without even knowing it.  And, a larger cup allows works to get me closer to my goal.
  • Use a filter pitcher or install a filter in your home to help rid the earth of water bottle pollution and save yourself A LOT of cash in the process.  When it’s always freely available to you, you will likely drink more.

When you increase your water intake, you will feel more energetic, your workouts will be more beneficial, your skin will glow & feel less dry, your hair and nails will improve, water will help flush out waste and hydrate your body and studies have shown that people who drink plenty of water release body fat easier than those who don’t…and the list goes on and on.
