My son was sick last week so I took full advantage of the day off and got busy on our annual Halloween Bash (more on that later). At the end of the day, I sat looking at my coffee table. It’s a lovely coffee table that used to be my Nana’s coffee table. It’s a little bit mid-century modern and I like it in our craftsman house. What I really like about it, is that it has a shelf to hold magazines and other, well, crap. Another thing I like, is that the top is glass, but it’s rimmed in wood so the glass is protected. It still has the original glass in it actually. That glass has gone through 2 children and is on to it’s third. With any luck, we’ll make it through. But, being glass, it shows all the crap. I don’t like that. And, being old(er), it has some scratches in it.
So, there I was staring at a lot of crap and thought, “I really don’t want to find a new home for all that crap because it always makes its way back out here. I just want to cover it.” Now, I don’t know if it’s because I was in a creative mood all day, and so my creative brilliance was in overdrive, but what I do know is the next thing that happened has never happened so easily. You see, usually my creative brilliance comes up with an idea that seems super easy, but then turns into a whole complicated mess that requires either more money, time, or my Mom’s help to complete. This, however, happened right there while my guests were about to eat there food on my table.
I kindly moved their food onto little food trays (we were going to watch a movie, I don’t always feed my guests on t.v. trays like we all did in the 70’s, so don’t act like you’re all that – pfff, snobby snob) and started covering the glass with burlap I had in my linen closet. I sort of, kind of taped it together, then I just plopped the glass back into the opening and pulled the burlap so that it became taught. I really like the outcome. Not sure how cleaning will go over, but it’s burlap, no biggie.
Here’s the before and after pictures. Well, to be fair, I didn’t actually take a before picture, but I found this one where my husband and son were watching a 3D movie and the coffee table just happened to be in the picture and there was a fair amount crap all around, so I thought it was a great before picture.
