Need some ideas for your New Year’s celebration?  How about throw a casual house party where people can come and go and everyone plays games?  It can be board games, or video games.  The interactive video games are a lot of fun – games like Wii dance, or Xbox dancing games.  Even online trivia games where everyone logs in with their phone are a lot of fun.  There’s a really fun online game called Fibbage, that’s a lot like the board game Balderdash.  Everyone uses their phone or tablet to play and answer the questions/create their own definitions and then everyone has to guess what the right answer is.

For a party like this, make it casual or dressy, kids or no kids (they can have their own video game area), supply basic finger foods like cheese plates, crackers, quesadilla triangles for the kids, charcuterie boards, spiral wraps, nuts, heated appetizers from Trader Joe’s, etc.

For drinks, make sure to have a large dispenser of water on hand.  Then buy a few bottles of champagne and set out a few mixers for people if they want to make their bubbly a little special – chambord, and blood orange soda are both good ones. And, maybe a signature cocktail or two.  Let everyone know that you’ll have champagne, but if they want anything else to feel free to bring it themselves.  Juice boxes are always great for the kiddos.

Here’s some pics to get your creative juices flowing (sorry for the blurry ones, I normally wouldn’t post them, but they all turned out a bit blurry – perhaps taking pictures at midnight not such a good idea – just kidding):
