Protect Your Lips

With everyone getting their fair share of sun during the summer months, protecting our skin is highly important. While many make the effort in protecting their skin from the damaging UV rays, the same should go for protecting our lips as our lips are just as at risk to develop skin cancer as the rest of our body is. As extreme sunburn to the lips can result in blistering, dryness, redness and tenderness, it’s important we take preventative measures in protecting them. This can easily be accomplished with being diligent about applying lipstick, lip glosses or lip balms with SPF incorporated into them as an ingredient. Not only will these kinds of products come in handy for the summer but really for the entire year as our lips are still exposed to UV rays throughout the Spring, Fall and yes, even Winter.

Skip the Shampoo Occasionally

With all the humidity, chlorine and sweat our hair goes through every summer, shower time only becomes more important during the hot months. However, natural oils and moisture are necessities for your hair, especially during the summer months of intense humidity. In order to retain healthy hair, don’t feel the need to use shampoo for every shower but only every other. On the days you skip the shampoo, lather your hair with a moisturizing conditioner and/or a leave-in conditioner. This shower routine will give you perfectly nourished and moisturized hair for the summertime.

Buy Vegan & Cruelty-Free

If you really want to achieve a healthy beauty look, one of the best places to start is with an awareness of the ingredients used in the products you choose. If you want only the healthiest ingredients applied to your body, use makeup and personal care products that are certified vegan and cruelty-free. This will ensure that you’re applying only the most natural and healthy ingredients possible to your body. If you’re not sure which companies are vegan and cruelty-free, look towards sites such as Leaping Bunny or PETA to give you the rundown on what companies to look out for. Another option is to can look for companies with websites that provide the full ingredients list of its products. For example, vegan and cruelty-free hair color company, oVertone lists out the ingredients in all of their hair color products in order to give full transparency to what you’re applying onto your hair. With thousands of companies now hopping onto the vegan and cruelty-free trend, you’ll find that the switch to this natural and healthy kind of beauty is as easy as ever.

Don’t Use the Sun as Your Only Source for Vitamin D

While the sun is an amazing (and warm) way to get some vitamin D into your system, it certainly shouldn’t be your only source as constant sun can be potentially damaging to your skin. As we all need vitamin D to help support the health of our immune system and maintain healthy bones and teeth, there are other ways we can get our daily input of vitamin D, with not just relying on the sun as our main source. You can also choose to consume it through foods and drinks that contain a reasonable amount of vitamin D such as milk, soy milk, or cereals that are fortified with vitamin D, fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel, egg yolks, cheese, and mushrooms. However, if you’re on a strict diet, you can simply take vitamin D in pill form. No matter how you decide to get your daily intake of vitamin D, maintaining a safe and optimal amount will only help you feel as healthy as possible for all your summer events!
