Today is National Hot Dog Day, so I made junkyard chili cheese dogs a la Wienerschnitzel style

I have a secret, that’s not really a secret to anyone who knows me…I LOVE WIENERSCHNITZEL! The chili cheese dogs, and junkyard dogs are my all time fave and the french fries rival those of another fast food chain. A junkyard dog puts together all of the good stuff – the dog in a bun, the famous chili, the cheese, the french fries, grilled onions and mustard. OMG, just thinking about it makes me salivate – I might have a problem:)

Wienschnitzel’s are not easy to find, but we have a few throughout San Diego county and I just might know where every one of them is located. The cool thing is they sell the chili by the can, so this can be a really easy undertaking if you want. In this case, it was during Covid and at the time, the cans weren’t sold for delivery. So, what’s a girl to do? Search online for someone who has reverse engineered it of course. I found a few recipes, and the ones that were similar to each other are the ones I followed and Pinned to my Pinterest Board. Here is a link to the one I mostly followed on

Once the chili is made, I had french fries delivered because they needed to be the same fries! I diced and grilled up some yellow onions, pulled out the sliced American cheese, heated the dogs and the buns. Then I put the buns and dogs in a foil lined baking dish and started layering – cheese first, then dogs, then chili, french fries, grilled onions and a good slathering of mustard. Ready to eat! Why did I foil line? Just to help with clean up.

Tomorrow – we eat salad!
